‘COME OUT OF HER, MY PEOPLE’

What, precisely, were Babylon’s three materialistic sins?
“Fallen is Babylon” in 18:2 It’s clear from this and many other places in Revelation that John arranges his material topically or artistically, not chronologically. For Babylon was seen as already fallen in 14:8 and 16:19. In chapter 17 she was alive and well, but fallen again in chapter 18. We saw last time we were in Revelation that Babylon is the city of man, embodied in the first century by the dazzling commercial splendor of Rome.
“Rejoice” in 18:20. Two weeks from today we’ll come back to Revelation 18 and consider in what sense is it ever right for God’s people to rejoice over God’s judgment of the wicked: “Three Cheers for Vengeance.”
